What is the difference between Silicone and Saline implants?

The difference between silicone and saline implants has to do with the material inside their shell - saline implants are filled with salt water while silicone implants are filled with a semi-solid, gel form of silicone.

Silicone implants are said to have a more natural feel and movement to them compared to a saline breast implant.

What are the short term risks assocaited with silicone breast implants?

Leaking, rupturing, hardening, shifting, and wrinkling.

What are the long term risks associated with Silicone implants?

Silicone implants do not last forever. On average, women should have them replaced every 10 years.

Silicone implants that rupture are more difficult to detect than saline implants. The FDA recommends bi-annual MRIs in order to help detect a leaking or ruptured silicone gel implant.

Should I choose smooth or textured Silicone implants?

Smooth surface implants are easier to insert and require smaller incisions. However, it is believed textured implants offer a reduced risk of breast hardening.

Is Silicone considered harmful to my general health?

Outside of the standard risks involved with any type of surgery, breast augmentation carries its own set of risks, such as capsular contracture, implant deflation, symmastia, seroma, necrosis, changes in nipple and/or breast sensation, plus several other potential risks.
